August 2nd – Green Thumb Weekend and the 1st Annual Heirloom Tomato Tasting
Many of our vendors are home-based gardeners who grow the foods and make the product themselves.  This weekend is intended to help the public understand what all goes into the production of their foods.  Anyone who would like to learn the basics of gardening or who may have specific questions would be encouraged to attend.  The time-honored tradition of raising and harvesting food for family consumption has finally become an increasingly popular alternative for saving money during a troubled economy.  Can you believe it?
This weekend there will be an “Heirloom Tomato Tasting” event and will feature the tomatoes from our vendors.  We are also inviting back all the children who were given one of our tomato seedlings to grow at home as we will display these to the market customers.  We will also have Peggy Campbell, a Kentucky Master Gardener from the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service who will be answering any questions the public may have about gardening.  Our musical guests will be Lewis Mathis as well as a separate performance by the Beargrass Praise Choir from our market host, the Beargrass Christian Church.

August 9th – Kids’ Weekend
The Heart of St. Matthews Farmer’s Market will be hosting a monthly Kids’ Weekend in order to provide a family-friendly environment with appropriate activities for all our visitors.  We are delighted to bring families together for a community event that everyone can appreciate and enjoy.  We look forward to having these special weekends throughout the future and hope to see more families out there soon!
The events scheduled for this weekend will include free face painting from the Beargrass Youth Ministry and interactive music from Musical Milestones, which is Sharon Owen from our Ear’s What’s Poppin’ vendor.  This weekend will feature other music from the Red-Haired Boys and Lewis Mathis.  Our featured non-profit organizations will be the Waldorf School and some representatives from the Cornerstone Child Development Center.

August 16th – 1st Annual Kentucky Proud Weekend
We are celebrating our state’s very own Kentucky Proud program this weekend as we welcome the Commissioner for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Richie Farmer.  The Commissioner will be visiting the market between 9AM and 10AM and is expected to speak about the Kentucky Proud program sometime during his attendance.  We are happy to host this event for the community and hope all will attend the market in celebration of Kentucky Proud.  Remember…“Nothing else is close.”

We will also welcome back the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Services who will provide representatives from the Kentucky Master Gardeners, Master Food Volunteers, 4-H, and a Family Consumer Science Agent, who will be answering questions about their programs.  Our musical guests will be Lewis Mathis and the Red-Haired Boys will be performing as well.
