History of the Media Center

According to the history of Beargrass Christian Church, the beginning of its library is synonymous with the beginning of the ministry in 1931 of Walter E. Lawrenson.

In 1953, a library for the use of Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) was created.  It was financed by book donations and a small budget and operated out of the kitchen.

In 1965, the library had approximately 750 catalogued volumes and was located in the church basement.

In 1978, the CWF passed a resolution to name the library “The Walter E. Lawrenson Memorial Library” at their meeting on March 28.  On April 2, Beargrass dedicated an enlarged and redecorated library to the memory of Dr. Lawrenson.  The library had evolved into a media center containing art, audio and video tapes, as well as 2000 books.  Dr. Lawrenson served Beargrass for 38 years as minister and associate minister.

In 1986, the financial support for the library was secured in perpetuity by the annual interest from the newly established Beargrass Endowment Fund.

Today:  The media center benefits largely from donations, endowment fund, memorials, budget, efforts of Dr. John Hull, the librarian , and very importantly – the volunteers.
