A list of Circle Meetings

DW meets monthly, September through May, in small and large-group settings and offers projects designed to develop growth and friendship. DW general meetings are open to everyone, and some are in the evening and some in the morning to accommodate everyone's schedule.

DW members take part in a number of service projects, including:

  • Providing lunch for children and parents at the outpatient department for Children with Special Care Needs. Christmas gifts are also collected for the clinic.
  • Volunteering at the Louisville campus of CCC of Kentucky and at Wayside Christian Mission.
  • Visiting church members who are shut-ins or nursing home residents.
  • Preparing kits that are sent to the needy throughout the world.
  • Planning and implementing a memorial service each May.
  • Pillow stuffing for mastectomy patients at Kentucky hospitals through the American Cancer Society.
  • Collection of "Upper Room" and other monthly devotionals to be distributed to nursing homes.
  • Collection of nonperishable food items throughout November for Dare to Care.
  • Collection of used eyeglasses for recycling.
  • Aunt Mary's Storybook Project.

DWMStorybook Project

In April 2001, six DWM members visited the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange with a selection of books. The ten inmates who signed up selected a book for each of their children. Three weeks later, the women returned with tape recorders and assisted the men as they recorded the books for their children. The books and tapes were then mailed to the children, with happy results reported. One working mother came home to find that her sitter had played the tape for the children, and they were trying to talk into the tape player to send a message to their father. One small boy cried when he heard his father's voice, played the tape over and over and cherished the book so much he slept with it.

Word about the project spread in the prison, and when the Beargrass members went back in June, they recorded 54 books for 26 inmates who repeatedly expressed their appreciation for this opportunity. DWM plans to continue the project as long as funds are available. DWM members who have been to the prison are deeply moved by the inmates' love and concern for their children as attested by the personal messages they add and the care and expression with which they read.

Pillow Stuffing

In 1980, a member presented the idea of making the pillows to the DWM as a special project that we could do for the American Cancer Society. The volunteer, who had made the small pillows for the cancer patients' comfort for many years, could no longer do this service. Yet the small pillows were still needed. Without hesitation, the women of DWM agreed to do this service.

Our DWM is no longer the only organization that makes the pillows. Literally thousands have been made through the years at the pillow-stuffing days, which take place four days each year.

Many awards have been given to our DWM, but the greatest blessing is knowing that we are helping the cancer patients to have comfort and courage.

All women of the church are invited to join in this program. The fellowship and making warm friendships in service to others is a Beargrass Church tradition. Pillow stuffings take place at 9:30 a.m. in fellowship hall. Often circles schedule their own pillow stuffings to help make the goal of 1,000 plus pillows a year. Watch for the next pillow stuffing date. No experience is necessary. Bring a sandwich and stay for lunch.
